June 2003

Project # 10-01-01125
Due to recent changes in EPA regulations, brick and tile manufacturers must now comply with MACT requirements for HF, HCl, SO2, and dust emissions on their kiln exhausts. FKI was approached by a leading supplier in the industry to make recommendations and offer a proposal to clean the kiln exhausts at three of their plants. Though the technology had not been used on this process before, wet scrubber / absorber systems were designed, proposed, and finally installed in May 2003. Each system supplied included a quench section, a packed tower section, ductwork, an exhaust fan, pumps, piping and valves, instrumentation, a control panel with starters, a stack with platform and ladder, a make-up water tank package, a bleed tank package, and a caustic tank package. Materials of construction included FRP, CPVC, and alloy C276. In June 2003 the first of the stack emissions tests was completed. The results proved that wet scrubbing technology is the solution for the brick and tile industry. The removal efficiencies achieved are much higher than traditional dry scrubbers and are more economical.
